What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is not so much a disease, as it occurs very naturally with age. As the discs between the vertebrae of the spine act as shock absorbers for bending, twisting or with compression, they can gradually show signs of aging throughout the lifespan. As a result, the intervertebral disc may not provide the same level of support as it once did and pain can result.

Degenerative Disc Disease

How is a Degenerative Disc Disease commonly treated?

There are many ways of treating degenerative disc disease, including exercise therapy, swimming, weight loss, anti-inflammatory medication, corticosteroid injections or surgery, should the condition be server enough. Exercise therapy should always be included in overall treatment regardless of the severity of the condition, as it helps in keeping the surrounding musculature of the area strong and the spine mobile. This is important to maintain and improve spinal function as this is helpful for reducing overall pain.

How can an Exercise Physiologist help?

An Exercise Physiologist can assess your current level of mobility and function and coach you through a program that is in line with your goals.
